Daniel McKinnon and Daniel Gilchrist

Sine Consulting has welcomed two new apprentices to the business, strengthening our commitment to developing the next generation of building services professionals and creating meaningful routes into the industry.

“Apprenticeships combine technical learning with real project experience, giving people a strong foundation on which to build their careers.”

Welcoming new talent to Sine

At Sine Consulting, we believe the future of our industry depends on giving talented people the opportunity to develop their skills through a combination of education, mentoring and real project experience.

We are therefore delighted to have recently welcomed two new apprentices to the Sine team.

Daniel Gilchrist has joined us as a Mechanical Design Apprentice, beginning his career in building services engineering following a successful work experience placement, and is working alongside our experienced engineers and designers. From the outset, he will have the opportunity to develop practical design skills and see how mechanical building services progress from initial concept through to detailed design and delivery.

Our second apprentice

joins us on a 4-month placement through PlanBEE North East, an innovative higher apprenticeship programme delivered by Gateshead College in partnership with employers across the built environment.

A different route into the built environment

PlanBEE was created to provide an alternative route into professional careers across architecture, engineering, building services and construction. Apprentices combine academic study with workplace experience and rotate between employers, helping them develop a broader understanding of the different disciplines and organisations involved in delivering the built environment.

For Sine, becoming involved with PlanBEE is about more than hosting an apprentice. It allows us to play our part in developing young talent in the North East while providing meaningful exposure to mechanical and electrical building services design.

PlanBEE apprentices undertake real work within their host businesses, supported by workplace mentoring. Their practical experience is linked directly to the knowledge, skills and behaviours developed through their studies.

Learning through real projects

We want our apprentices to become genuine members of the Sine team. That means learning alongside experienced engineers and technicians, gaining an understanding of how building services consultancy works in practice and, as their knowledge and confidence develop, contributing to live projects with the right support and mentoring around them.

For a multidisciplinary industry such as ours, there is enormous value in combining technical education with practical experience. It is also a two-way process. Bringing apprentices into the business introduces new perspectives and encourages experienced staff to share their knowledge, explain why we do things the way we do and help develop the engineers who will shape our industry in the years ahead.

Developing talent in the North East

As a North East business, supporting routes into professional careers within our region is particularly important to us.  Alongside our involvement in PlanBEE, taking on our own Mechanical Design Apprentice reflects Sine’s wider commitment to developing people from the start of their careers and giving them the experience, responsibility and support they need to progress.

We are delighted to welcome both apprentices to Sine and look forward to seeing them develop over the months and years ahead.

“There is a real responsibility on businesses like ours to help develop the next generation of engineers. Apprenticeships provide a fantastic route into the industry, combining technical learning with experience of real projects. We’re pleased to be supporting PlanBEE for the first time this year, as well as continuing to invest directly in our own future engineers.”
