St. Columba’s Hospice Edinburgh
St Columba’s Hospice is located in the Trinity area of Edinburgh, to the North of the city. The original Hospice consisted of two Category B Listed, early 19th century villas: 15 Boswall Road (Challenger Lodge) and 17 Boswall Road (Manor House); set in large garden grounds overlooking the Firth of Forth.
The Hospice provides palliative care services and, education and research facilities and had set a strategic project objective to establish an exemplary new Hospice facility, creating a blueprint for specialist palliative care service provision and to also provide a customised education and training facilities to maximise the learning and development opportunities for students, staff and partnering organisations.
The project was split into two distinct phases, which were designed, tendered and constructed separately.
The first phase of the project comprised the refurbishment and extension of the Grade B Listed building at 17 Boswall Rd. New mechanical and electrical services were designed to provide state of the art teaching facilities and office accommodation. This phase of the project was completed in December 2011.
The second phase of the project consisted of the refurbishment of the second Grade B listed building at 15 Boswall Rd and the construction of a new four storey ward block which was built to replace the existing single storey unit.
The mechanical and electrical elements of the project were designed as an integrated part of the prestigious building with detail being given to both practicality and quality of finish.
The first phase of the project was fully designed and constructed using the traditional method of procurement, whereas the second phase was fully designed but constructed on a design and build basis, with the consultants being novated to the successful main contractor. The second phase of the project was completed in February 2014.
