Hotel Indigo, Durham
Shire Hall in Durham is a Grade II listed building located along Old Elvet in Durham City Centre.
The building had stood vacant for some time prior to a developer coming on board with the idea of converting the building to a 4 star Boutique Hotel, for Hotel Indigo part of the Intercontinental Hotel Group.
We were employed as Mechanical and Electrical design consultants to provide the detailed design for the refurbishment.
Careful consideration was given to ensure services were concealed where possible and routed to maintain the existing period features.
Central boiler plant was installed within the basement to satisfy heating and hot water requirements. The existing flue stack was utilised to conceal the new flue and new pipework routed through communal areas to service each room.
Pipework and cable routes had to be carefully established to minimise disruption to existing building fabric and provide a concealed installation. The basement level contained all primary service runs with vertical risers established in strategic locations, which worked well to achieve a fully concealed installation.
The bedrooms, health suite, bar, coffee shop, restaurant and meeting room were heated/comfort cooled using a number of VRF installations. The external condensers were located toward the rear of the building and concealed to minimize the visual impact and control noise outbreak.
Power, data and audio-visual outlets were concealed in floor boxes or within bespoke period feature casings.
High efficiency LED lighting installations were provided to the key feature areas, Reception, stairwell, entrance and Dining Room. Many of these fittings were bespoke and designed to compliment the building and enhance the existing features.
