Keswick Museum and Gallery, Keswick

A major refurbishment and extension scheme was completed in 2015. This included a full replacement of the mechanical and electrical services and the provision of a kitchen and café facility.

The services are generally traditional but the main gallery is provided with windcatcher natural ventilation terminals and LED lighting. The original building was provided with electricity in 1905 and the Keswick School of Industrial Arts manufactured ‘electrolier’ light fittings which were still installed prior to the refurbishment. These were overhauled and rewired and retained in the completed scheme.

The building makes excellent use of natural light.

The display track lighting incorporates a combination of LED spot and uplighting which is totally flexible to cater for changing interpretation.

Following the enhancement project, the museum was awarded the accolade of Museum of the Year in the 2015 Cumbria Life Culture Awards and Best Small Visitor Attraction in the 2015 Cumbria Tourism Awards. It was also shortlisted for RICS awards in four categories.
